Biosafe

SUMMARY

Biosafe, located in Pittsburgh, PA, invented, patented, and registered with EPA a novel antimicrobial polymer. This polymer was built around a unique chemistry – called an organosilane – highly compatible with most objects but lethal to microorganisms.

Biosafe can used in countless applications. It can be applied to objects as a surface-coating spray or incorporated into them during the manufacturing process. On surfaces, the result is enhanced resistance to microbial degradation. On fabrics and other materials, the result is superior prevention of microbially-associated odors. In medical devices such as the Crosstex face mask, BIOSAFE kills disease causing germs, including flu viruses, in or on the mask itself.

BACKGROUND

Years ago, Biosafe executives set out to find a microbiology laboratory with expertise that matched their product line. For internal research and development, they needed a lab that was accessible, interested in the science, and respectful of confidentiality. Moreover, they needed a lab that had fast turnaround times so that their ongoing research and product optimization endeavors would progress quickly.

Biosafe also needed an independent laboratory they could confidently recommend to their industrial customers who were incorporating Biosafe into various products, to verify that the incorporated antimicrobial was functioning as expected prior to sale. Such a lab would be well versed in antimicrobials, scientifically rigorous, and knowledgeable of treated surface testing.

Microchem Laboratory fit that role perfectly. In 2008, Biosafe contracted its first study with the lab. Since then, the two companies have worked together through a variety of fast-paced technical projects. Along the way, standard methods have changed, the industry has grown, and Microchem Laboratory has had the privilege of watching Biosafe grow from a startup antimicrobial company to an established player within the antimicrobial additive industry.

Biosafe’s customers have also benefited from Microchem Laboratory expertise with regard to the testing of antimicrobial surfaces, fabrics, and other objects. For example, when results from studies run for Biosafe customers don’t come out as expected, the lab gladly assists with troubleshooting. Many times, simple tweaks to the manufacturing process are all that is needed to get products to a high-performance state with regard to antimicrobial activity.

TESTING AND COLLABORATION

In 2009, Biosafe expanded their internal microbiological testing capabilities. Microchem Laboratory approached the transition as a partner, offering guidance and expertise to

microbiologists within Biosafe whenever it was beneficial. In the process, both laboratories were able to further develop and harmonize test procedures around the standard ASTM and ISO test methods, resulting in reduced variability and improved scientific accuracy.

Microchem Laboratory is happy to help a customer, even if no testing is ongoing. The lab will answer technical questions, opine on current industry events, or update clients with regard to changes in the regulatory landscape. By working closely with Microchem Laboratory, Biosafe effectively had a large, capable microbiology laboratory. They used this resource to their advantage to solidify their position as a technical leader within the industry of antimicrobial additives and coatings.

STORY OUTCOME

The future will surely bring a number of confirmatory efficacy studies for Biosafe’s many happy customers. Each promises to be unique and exciting, since each product into which they incorporate their proprietary antimicrobial has physical and chemical characteristics that influence the conduct and outcome of the various test methods. Regardless of the diverse array of product applications, one thing is for sure. Biosafe can rely on Microchem Laboratory for deep microbiology expertise and Microchem Laboratory can rely on Biosafe technology to reliably deliver excellent antimicrobial activity to a range of objects.
