Benzyl ethanol is a colorless liquid used for many purposes, including as a solvent or for fragrances. It occurs naturally in fruit and is a metabolite produced by Escherichia coli bacteria. Benzyl ethanol is commonly used as an OTC lotion to treat head lice and as a preservative in many other products. This compound is generally recognized as safe by the FDA in monitored concentrations for adults; however, it can be toxic for infants. Concentrations up to 5% are allowed for various products including food, OTC products, and pharmaceuticals. Gas chromatography (GC) can be used to test for the presence of benzyl ethanol in a wide range of products and quantify it.
