Lidocaine is a tertiary amine used for local and topical anesthesia. In OTC products, it is typically sold as a topical cream that relieves pain and itching by blocking nerve signals. Lidocaine can become toxic if too much of it is absorbed through the skin, which is why the FDA warns against using products that contain more than 4% lidocaine.
Lidocaine Hydrochloride
Lidocaine hydrochloride is the salt form of lidocaine and is a member of the amide class of anesthetics. Like lidocaine, this compound blocks nerve impulses temporarily and it is most often sold in the form of a gel.
